The Skills You Need To Have In Writing A Resume And Cover Letter

The Skills You Need To Have In Writing A Resume And Cover LetterThere are several things that need to be noted in order to make sure that the skills you have and the skills you are applying for are being accurately represented on your resume and cover letter. Most people overlook this but they will pay a price in the end. Many employers view resumes as a mirror to their own character, especially if you have an impressive resume but you don't have the needed skills to fill it. Your resume is your first impression. It's much easier to hire someone with an untapped skill than someone who has no skill at all. If you have a few holes in your resume that you know you can fill, then it is much easier to find someone to fill those holes. It's much more difficult to find someone to fill in your gaps and fill in those areas where you don't have any skill at all. If you already have experience, but you don't have the skill set that you would like to highlight, you're better off looking for a job where you can have that skill set. Otherwise, you'll waste a lot of time and money with a resume that isn't impressive. The first thing you need to do when you are going through your job search is to take stock of what you have to offer. Figure out what your skills are and what you can do that your competitors don't. You can then go about reviewing your resume and cover letter in order to make sure that you have done your best to portray what you have to offer.Next, read over your resume and read over your cover letter as well. Do you have any glaring errors? Do you misspell words in places where you don't have the most expertise? Check your cover letter to make sure you haven't misspelled words. You may have many years of experience at an entry-level job, but you need to show employers you have those skills too. Start putting together a resume that demonstrates the areas you can really offer them, rather than the areas you do. Take time to get your resume out there so they know who you are. A resume and cover letter doesn't need to be complete when you're just beginning your job search.Make sure you have a nice, comprehensive cover letter to go along with your resume. Make sure you use only the skills you know you have and showcase your strengths. Then, once you have gotten to the interview, you can turn your resume and cover letter into a powerful tool to let the hiring manager know exactly what they're getting when they see your resume and cover letter. So, write your resume and cover letter properly. They are your first impressions, but they aren't your last ones.

Create A Content Universe To Attract Great Employees - Work It Daily

Create A Content Universe To Attract Great Employees - Work It Daily To earn their attention and respect of the great employees you haven't hired yet, you need as many ways as possible to engage them. High-quality future hires all have different preferences, and they’re at different stages of involvement with your brand. If someone just started to look for a new job, they'll want a different information about you than someone who has been eyeing your company for a long time. Some hires-to-be are visual learners, while others would prefer to read. Some have short attention spans, while others could dig through your content for hours. The best way to present your Employment Brand (and more importantly, connect with your audience) is to create a universe of different content. Who Does It Right Although this example isn’t specific to Employment Branding, it still shows just how many possibilities there are. Look at all of the different things casinos do to make money. They have table games, slots, video gambling, stores, restaurants, shows and even gas stations. If there’s a way to take your money, they utilize it. You’re not trying to earn your potential employees' winnings back, but you are trying to earn their attention and respect. With the power of word-of-mouth, that's almost as valuable. Build Your Stars, Planets and Galaxies Observe your company’s (and industry’s) universe through a few different vantage points. You could examine the company as a straight-out-of-school, entry-level worker, a CEO or a seasoned middle manager. Pretend you’re an HR person looking for a job, or an IT gal or sales rep. Are you a lone wolf or a team player? Chances are, some of your future applicants will be one of those, and there will be plenty of the other type too. Whether it's through their backgrounds, work styles or skills, no two employees are the same. What your employees are like, what your office looks like, the policies your company has, your personal attitude, the clients you’ve worked with, the projects you’ve created, the teams you’ve been a part of and even the sports teams you root for are all different lenses/filters you could use to see how different people might perceive your employment brand. You don't need a piece of content for every single one, but a diversity of articles, photos, videos and other content will certainly help. Examples Anything can be turned into multiple forms of content these days. Your content strategy should be like a mind map: anything can be related to anything else, and you can take many different approaches to the same things to get different results. For instance, How does your sales department operate vs. how does your marketing department operate? What skills are necessary to be a great customer service rep, and how do they compare to HR? How To Do It Star-by-Star It will be a huge undertaking to share that many different pieces of content, but it’s something that you can be working on over time, instead of doing it all at once. Brainstorm the different themes you would want (how-to’s, profiles, jokes, press release-style posts, etc.), the formats of content you could use (text, audio, video, mixed media, infographics, pictures, memes), the departments in your company and the people you want involved in creating the content. Once you have those planned out, ask the participants to pick one thing from each other group and, and you have your first piece of content. For example, tell someone to create a how-to post involving text and an infographic about your marketing department. The story could be “How to Write a Post Company X’s Marketing Department Would be Proud Of” or “How To Survive A Day In Company X’s Marketing Wing” or “How To Think Of Something New To Write Every Day.” Organizing Your Universe Use a spreadsheet or content marketing software to categorize the content you’ve created according to the criteria we mentioned above. With some simple sorting, you can find out how many pieces a specific employee wrote, or how many were about marketing, or how many infographics you have. Tying in some analytics, you can start to see trends about which types of posts your visitors interact with most. Create more of what works, or spend more time/effort on giving the lesser posts more of a push. If you know which types of visitors are engaging with one type of content or another, you can also change your publishing accordingly. (If you find sales leads like text, but potential recruits like video and you want more employees before more leads, then produce more video. If you want more customers, write more text posts.) The Unreachable (But Still Important) Goal With the right approach, you can take your content strategy from the Big Bang all the way to a spread-out, growing complex universe of information, any of which could potentially help you attract great employees. Although you’ll never have a finished universe of content, you should try to create anything and everything involved with your industry. Does Word-of-Mouth Hiring Harm Diversity

Does Word-of-Mouth Hiring Harm Diversity Studies from the likes of Silkroad, Jobvite, CareersXRoads and the even the U.S. Department of Labor all tell us that employee referrals are the No. 1 source of hire, generally being mora influential than the almighty jobs boards and career sites, the golden gateway to employment for the mass market job seeker. Research by Evolv has also shown that, during the first 200 days, referred workers are more productive due to them having a more realistic view of the job and better internal networks. The Evolv survey also showed that referred workers are 20 percent less likely to quit their jobs. Its no surprise then that more and more companies are starting to increase their dependence on word-of-mouth hiring/employee referrals and of course this paradigm shift has been greatly assisted by social technologies. Yes, a New York Times piece shows that employee referr als now account for 45 percent of non entry-level placements at Ernst and Young, which isup from 28 percent in 2010. The piece also cited a Federal Bank of New York study which revealed that referred candidates had a 40 percent better chance of being recruited than other candidates. It seems like we are entering a new age of highly efficient and effective referral based recruitment which will eventually banish all other more meritocratic forms of recruitment to the graveyard (or at least into the outer recesses of corporate dark space). But, this all sounds too good to be true, doesnt it? Well, your suspicions are right all that glitters is not gold. While I am in no way going to launch a tirade on the evils of using employee referrals in the selection process, there are certain perils and pitfalls of this form of hiring that I wish to draw your attention to, in particular, the potential negative impact that employee referrals can have on your companys diversity agenda. For example, t he Federal Bank of New York study mentioned above showed that 63.5 percent of employers referred applicants of the same sex and 71.5 percent favored the same race or ethnicity. So, the more that a company increases its dependency on referrals, the bigger the negative impact on its diversity agenda. We already know that there is a natural tendency for people to want to hire others who they like, share interests with and can be friends with, as shown in the study,Hiring as Cultural Matching The Case of Elite Professional Service Firms. This means that too high a dependency on employee referrals can mean that anincreasingly homogeneous stream of applicants will be entering the hiring process. In other words, heavily relaying upon employee referrals can lead to a monoculture. While monocultures may be great for social cohesion, they are bad for business. For example, a study of 14,000 leaders by Talent Innovations concluded that organizations need a balance of both male and female leaders if they are to be truly effective. Another study by the leistungspunkt Suisses Research Institute of 2,400 leaders between 2005 and 2011 showed that stocks with at least one woman on the board outperformed those with no women on the board by 26 percent. Another report by DiversityInc showed that over a 10-year period, the top 50 companies for Diversity outperformed the Nasdaq by 28 percent, the SP 500 by 25 percent and the Down Jones Industrial Average by 22 percent. So, 1) since monocultures have been shown to beto some degreedetrimental to modern business and 2) since a side effect of employee referrals hiring is increasing homogeneity of the workforce, employers should strike a balance between employee referrals hiring and hiring on the open market. What is the right ratio? There isnt a specific number, but the rule of thumb from The New York Times article seemed to be to not go over the 50 percent mark for employee referrals hiring versus open market hiring.
